Stay cool this summer by avoiding common HVAC problems. Learn what to watch for and how to keep your air conditioner running smoothly all season long. Ask ChatGPT

When the heat kicks in, your air conditioner becomes the hero of your home. But like any hardworking system, it can run into trouble—especially during the peak of summer. At My Fireplace, we see a few common HVAC issues pop up every year. The good news? Most of them are avoidable with a little maintenance and attention.

Here are the top summer HVAC problems and what you can do to prevent them.

1. Dirty Air Filters

Clogged filters restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder. This can lead to uneven cooling, higher energy bills, or even a complete system shutdown if left too long.

How to avoid it:

Change your air filter every 1–3 months. If you’re unsure what type of filter your system uses or how often to replace it, our team can help during your next HVAC service appointment

2. Refrigerant Leaks

Low refrigerant levels can cause your AC to blow warm air or run constantly without cooling your home properly. It’s not just inefficient—it could damage your compressor over time.

How to avoid it:

If your system isn’t cooling well, don’t ignore it. Book a cooling system inspection so we can check for leaks and recharge refrigerant safely.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coils

A frozen coil may sound like a winter problem, but it’s common in summer too. It usually points to restricted airflow or low refrigerant. You’ll notice weak airflow and poor cooling before it ices over completely.

How to avoid it:

Keep filters clean, schedule seasonal tune-ups, and make sure vents are open and unblocked throughout your home.

4. Clogged Drain Lines

Your air conditioner pulls humidity from the air as it cools. That moisture drains through a condensate line. If that line gets clogged, you might see water pooling around your unit—or worse, water damage inside your home.

How to avoid it:

Regular maintenance includes cleaning your AC’s drain line to keep water flowing where it should. Book an AC tune-up to stay ahead of potential issues.

5. Thermostat Problems

Sometimes the issue isn’t your AC at all—it’s your thermostat. Batteries may be dead, settings may be off, or the sensor might be faulty.
